Otoplasty for Children

A highly requested procedure of Dr Turner’s is the otoplasty for children. Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is the process of reshaping the ear. This surgery is usually performed on children aged between 4 and 14. This procedure has become very popular – reports of children being bullied and tormented for misshapen or disproportionate ears are commonplace in the media. An otoplasty is usually performed for psychological and self-esteem reasons. When a child is concerned about the shape of their ears, they may be bullied by peers, or even co-workers when they are older.

Completing an otoplasty for children is a relatively simple procedure. The surgery corrects ears that protrude too far from the head, or have failed to develop normally. Children who are good candidates include:

  • Children with ears that protrude too far from the head,
  • Children who have a very large conchal bowl (inside the ear),
  • Children with under developed ears,
  • Children who have a cauliflower-like ear appearance
  • Children who are generally self-conscious and unhappy with their ear shape.

This procedure takes between one and two hours to perform under general anaesthetic. Otoplasty surgery will leave a small scar behind the ear, which can usually be covered by hair. This scaring is inconspicuous and will fade over time. To find out more about ear surgery, or specifically otoplasty for children, contact Dr Turner’s practice on 1300 437 758.
