How Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Work?

Wrinkles form by the repeated contraction of facial muscles under the skin which are important in our facial expressions. Therefore, dynamic wrinkles appear in the areas of the face that have a lot of daily movement, such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, around the eyes, the chin, and above the lip. Over time with the natural decrease of important elements in the skin like collagen and hyaluronic acid, these dynamic wrinkles become deeper and permanent.

The anti-wrinkle injection treatment works by injecting a small volume of a naturally derived protein into specific facial muscles which are causing the dynamic wrinkles. After the treatment, the underlying facial muscle gradually becomes weaker and the overlying skin is allowed to smooth out naturally.

Is It Safe?

Since its approval for cosmetic use in 2002, over 15 million people have been treated. It is one of the most widely researched medicines in the world. That said, we understand if you still have concerns, and we are happy to answer all your questions prior to your treatment.

Which Areas Are Treated?

During your consultation with our Cosmetic Physician, we develop a tailored treatment plan to address your concerns. Patients with good skin quality and dynamic wrinkles are the best candidates for anti-wrinkle treatments. Patients with damaged skin, deep static wrinkles can get excellent results with ongoing treatments. However, to get the best result they need to address the damaged skin with skin treatments, laser resurfacing or undergo one of the many surgical facial rejuvenation procedures offered by Dr Turner.

Anti-wrinkle injections are most commonly used to address:

•  Brow – horizontal lines on forehead
•  Frown – vertical lines between eyebrows
•  Crow’s feet – lines around the eyes

Additional areas that can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections:

•  Non-Surgical Brow lift – Selective placement around the eye and forehead to get 1-2 mm lift of the lateral eyebrow
•  Gummy Smiles – Specific placement to weaken the lip elevators and often combined with dermal fillers to the lips can enhance and balance your smile
•  Mouth lines – Very small dose placed close to the lip line can minimise radial lip lines from developing
•  Bunny lines – Small dose can minimise lines on the side of the nose occurring with smiling
•  Jawline – Injecting larger doses into the masseter muscle can produce a slimmer, feminine jawline. While injecting small doses to the chin crease can elongate the chin

How Long Do The Anti-Wrinkle Injections Last?

After your treatment, you will start to notice the movement of the treated muscles weakening over the first few days. By 2 weeks the full effect of the anti-wrinkle injection treatment is attained. We review patients at this time to check they are satisfied with the results and don’t require a top-up to adjust the result.

The results for anti-wrinkle treatments have full effect for about 3 months. After 4 months you may start to see movement of the underlying muscles again and the reoccurrence of dynamic wrinkles. With ongoing maintenance of anti-wrinkle injection treatments, due to the long-term weakening of the facial muscles the duration of effect can easily extend up to 6 months before repeat treatment is needed.

The Anti-Wrinkle Injection Procedure?

After your consultation, the areas to be treated are carefully marked with an eyeliner pencil. Prior to the treatment, we use some ice for a few minutes to numb the skin prior to the injection of the product using a small ultra-fine syringe. In some clients that are sensitive or may be anxious about the procedure, we can apply local anaesthetic numbing cream to the area 40 minutes prior to your treatment to make the treatment painless.

The individual injections only take a few moments to complete and the total session is generally only 20 minutes. While some redness may be seen at the site of injection, it usually dissipates within one hour. Occasionally a small bruise may develop, especially around the thin eyelid skin. This is easily camouflaged with some concealer makeup.

While you may return to work or social activities immediately after your anti-wrinkle injection treatment, we advise you to refrain from exercise for 2 days.
