Hair Transplantation

Many men and women suffering from hair loss have always dismissed undergoing a hair transplant procedure due to the fear of the traditional “strip method” because of the slow recovery time, the loss of sensation above the incision site, visibility of the linear scar on the back of the head, and the post-operative pain involved.

Now by offering the latest methods of follicular unit extraction (FUE) with Neograft 2.0 we can avoid these concerns and give superior hair restoration results. Neograft 2.0 is the newest technology in hair restoration that uses pneumatic controls to precisely extract complete individual hair follicles which can be immediately transplanted to selected areas of the scalp. The NeoGraft 2.0 is the only harvesting system on the market that has the only ‘NO TOUCH’ implantation technology.

NeoGraft 2.0 offers a variety of benefits, including:
• No scalpels
• No stitches
• No unsightly linear scar
• Minimal downtime
• Minimal discomfort
• Natural-looking results
• No damage to surrounding hair follicles
• Ability to have short or long hairstyle

The Hair Transplant Procedure

The majority of NeoGraft hair transplant procedures start in the morning at one of Dr Turner’s Sydney or Newcastle clinics — the length of time varies depending on the volume of hair being transplanted. Patients are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and can watch TV or listen to music during the procedure.

The procedure entails shaving of the donor area on the day of the procedure as this facilitates the harvesting of donor hair follicles. The scalp is then injected with local anaesthetic to allow for a painless procedure. This hair transplant can take anywhere between 2-5 hours depending on the number of hair follicles being harvested. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), harvested from the patient, is typically injected into the recipient site to enhance graft survival and growth.

The planned recipient sites on the scalp is then artistically designed by Dr Turner according to the correct angle, depth, orientation, and density required to achieve a natural result. The NeoGraft procedure starts by creating the numerous insertion sites in the planned recipient area to facilitate excellent graft take and allow accurate determination of the number of grafts required to achieve the desired follicular density.

Next, we start the donor harvest from the back and sides of the head where the hair growth is constant and permanent. The donor follicular units removed typically include groups of 1 to 4 hairs. The removal process is performed in a randomized pattern, so as the hair grows back will camouflage the harvest microdots once fully healed to be undetectable.

Once the required number of hair follicles have been harvested, the hair is carefully separated into groups with either 1, 2, 3 or 4 hairs per follicle. This is important as to create a natural hairline we transplant the single hair follicles into the anterior hairline, while those with 3 or 4 hairs per follicle are transplanted further back away from the hairline into the mid-scalp and crown regions to give better hair density. This process is facilitated by the NeoGraft 2.0 no-touch technique to allow consistent graft placement every time.

Recovery after Hair Transplant Surgery

On the first few days following the procedure, small scabs the size of a pinhead surrounding the transplanted hair follicles will be visible. These scabs usually go away within 7 to 10 days. Patients should expect to the donor site at the back of the head to return to normal around 10 days after surgery.

Bandages are removed after 48hrs, after which patients can be fairly social. It is advised that patients wait 2 weeks prior to assuming physical exercise to ensure optimal healing. Normal showering (with direct shower pressure and scrubbing of the transplanted grafts) can be resumed after 10 days.

A few weeks after surgery, the transplanted follicles enter a resting phase that lasts for 3 to 4 months and will shed their hair shafts to make way for new, healthy hair. Don’t worry, the transplanted hair follicles are alive and healthy under the skin. At this point, most patients will look very much like they did prior to surgery until the new hairs begin to grow.

The new hair begins to grow after this period and by 7 months around 50% of the newly transplanted follicles show new hair growth, but it’s not until 1 year that all the new follicles are growing new hair. Over the next 1 to 2 years the transplanted hair follicles will become filled in with thicker and fuller hair which can be cut and styled in any way you choose.

Expected Costs off NeoGraft 2.0

The cost of hair transplantation surgery will depend on the number of grafts needed to achieve your goals. Sometimes, multiple sessions may be needed to achieve proper coverage and/or density. General pricing can range from $6-$7 per graft.

Determining the cost of your hair transplant procedure depends on the degree of hair loss, and the number of grafts needed. For some patients, 1,000 grafts are enough to make a noticeable difference. For others, as many as 3,000 or more may be needed to attain the desired results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is NeoGraft 2.0?

NeoGraft 2.0 is the newest, automated manual hair transplant device on the market which facilitates the harvesting of hair follicles during a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant, dramatically improving the accuracy and speed over previously used manual extraction instruments. Grafts are gently aspirated into a humidified and intermittently irrigated collection canister on the harvesting handpiece itself, ensuring rapid collection and safe preservation of the grafts after being removed from the scalp, ensuring the best possible transplant result.

How do I know I am a good candidate for Neograft 2.0?

Candidates for hair restoration surgery are those individuals in good health with mild to severe hair loss and sufficient donor hair on the back of the scalp to transplant into the balding areas. Those with greater donor hair and higher hair density can typically expect better results. It is also important that you have reasonable cosmetic goals. Hair transplantation can achieve very good, natural results but cannot restore your hair to the density you had as a teenager. You may also need more than one transplant session to achieve your desired appearance. Your doctor will assess the amount of coverage needed to meet treatment goals.

Treatment of scars in the hair?

The NeoGraft 2.0 FUE System can also be used for ‘scar camouflage’ procedures for patients who have had prior linear “strip” harvests, other facial plastic surgery procedures (facelifts, browlifts) or sustained injuries, as well as for beards or eyebrow restoration.

How soon will I see results?

Hair follicles are taken from the hair in the back of the head that naturally continues to grow and are not susceptible to the effects of hormonal loss. Once the normal hair follicle has been implanted into the balding area, the grafted hair will stay in place for about two to three weeks before shedding – this is normal and an important part of the new growth process. After shedding, the new growth will begin in 3-4 months (sooner with the advent of PRP injections) and your hair will continue to grow after that, gradually and steadily increasing hair density on the scalp. Results are best appreciated between 12-18 months.

How long will the hair last?

Transplanted hair will likely last a lifetime. Certainly, hair loss does not stop after transplantation – some people will need continued maintenance and further sessions will likely be required, particularly if your balding pattern continues with age. Progressive hair loss or the desire for more density may require additional hair transplants. An estimate of balding pattern and the number of procedures needed will be discussed during the consultation with your doctor.

What does FUE stand for?

“F.U.E.” stands for “Follicular-Unit Extraction”. This describes a method of harvesting naturally occurring groups of hair follicles (a typically follicular unit can contain anywhere between 1-4 hair follicles) that are typically less than 1mm in diameter. This is the most advanced, minimally invasive hair transplant method which allows for the harvesting of substantial number of hair follicles from the donor area without a scalpel incision or any discernible scarring.

Do I have to get a total ‘buzz cut’ to have an FUE/NeoGraft 2.0 procedure?

Typically, the donor site is the only area that needs to be shaved. However, if you wear your hair long, this is not necessary as harvesting using the NeoGraft 2.0 device can be done by shaving small areas that can be covered by overlying existing hair. If you wear your hair short, it helps to shave the donor site very close to the scalp to maximum yield and for better blending as hair starts to grow back naturally.

Does NeoGraft FUE SCAR?

The extracted grafts removed during the hair removal process will leave virtually undetectable, flat “micro-dots”. While FUE does not result in any noticeable scarring, these tiny “micro-dot” scars may be visible if the hair is completely shaved. You may shave your hair down to 1/8th of an inch (1 guard on an electric razor) without anyone noticing your scars.
