Non Surgical Treatments

The hair loss prevention and restoration industry has exploded in recent years, with men and women worldwide spend billions of dollars per year on shampoos, vitamins, and nutritional supplements, hairpieces, lotions, and pills. Despite all the time and money spent on hair loss products, they may never see the results they want.

New advances in medical and surgical techniques and technology have made it possible for both men and women to slow their hair loss, reverse and restore it. Dr Turner offers a range of nonsurgical treatments to assist in your hair loss treatment.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet-rich plasma or PRP is simply a mixture of your blood plasma that is concentrated with additional platelets, growth factors, and cytokines and is used in numerous cosmetic procedures. It has proven exceptionally beneficial in the treatment for hair loss as well as in hair transplantation surgery in slowing the progression of hair loss and stimulating hair regrowth.

The treatment is a simple in-office procedure, where we obtain a sample of your own blood which is spun at a high speed in a centrifuge to separate the PRP from other components of blood. We then administer the PRP in a series of injections in the targeted areas of your scalp, which takes approximately 10 minutes. We combine the PRP injections with dermal needling to enhance the benefits of the PRP treatment. For optimal results, PRP injection therapy should be administered twice a year.

Benefits of PRP for Hair Restoration

• Improved hair follicle survival
• Shorter recovery times post hair transplant
• Less inflammation and irritation after the procedure
• Improved hair growth in the hair graft area

Medications

Individuals with hair thinning may benefit from hair growth medications. The two most common treatments are Finasteride for men, and Minoxidil for both men and women. While these medications may stabilize hair loss, they do not work on areas where the hair is completely gone (bald). In addition, if you stop using the medication at any point, what you have gained may be lost. You will simply return to the level of hair loss had you never used the medication, and likely continue to lose more hair as you age.

FINASTERIDE

The male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in genetically susceptible men is the main cause of male pattern baldness. Finasteride is a medication that blocks testosterone from converting to DHT by up to 70%, which helps control, stop, and even restore hair loss.

• It takes 6-12 months to achieve a cosmetic benefit
• Finasteride can be used to improve the result of hair transplant surgery by stabilizing the hair follicles surrounding the transplanted hairs, allowing for a better overall result
• Finasteride has been linked to temporary impotence, reduced sex drive, infertility, and depression while taking the medication (less than 2%)

MINOXIDIL

Minoxidil is a topical solution that is used to help stabilize hair loss in both men and women.   It works by causing the scalp blood vessels to dilate and opens potassium channels, allowing more oxygen, blood, and nutrients to reach the hair follicle. This process actively nourishes and stimulates hair follicles, converting fine thin (vellus) hair to thicker healthier (terminal) hair and boosts the growth phase (anagen) of the hair cycle.

• Twice daily Minoxidil has been shown to regrow hair in 85% of men and 60% of women
• It takes 6-12 months to achieve a cosmetic benefit
• This medication can be started before hair transplant surgery to prevent or limit hair shedding that might occur after surgery
