GUIDE Tummy Tuck

What is an Extended Tummy Tuck Procedure?

The extended tummy tuck procedure is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is performed with the purpose of enhancing the natural contours of the flanks and lower abdomen while tightening the skin in these areas.

This can give your body a better-contoured appearance.  This helps improve the overall appearance of the abdomen and gives you the confidence boost you are looking for and deserve.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

The ideal candidate for the extended tummy tuck procedure is someone who:

  • Is a non-smoker
  • Is unhappy with their appearance due to saggy skin in the lower abdomen and flanks region
  • Is physically and mentally healthy
  • Has realistic expectations from the procedure
  • Is making an informed decision

Benefits of the Extended Tummy Tuck Procedure

There are many benefits of the extended tummy tuck procedure but it is the physical benefits of the intervention that stand out the most.

1. Less Skin Infections or Rashes

Having excess skin with multiple skin folds allows bacteria and other microorganisms to grow in the area, resulting in severe skin infections and rashes. If persistent, these can cause medical complications and hence, should be treated immediately. This issue cannot be treated but can be prevented by undergoing the extended tummy tuck procedure which removes the excess skin completely so there are no excess skin folds.

2. Improved Aesthetics

An extended tummy tuck also improves the aesthetics and appearance of your abdomen and the flanks.

3. Lifestyle Benefits

More confidence to exercise and socialise

4. Clothing

Being able to shop more easily for clothing that fits

Your Extended Tummy Tuck Journey

Consultation for the Extended Tummy Tuck Surgery

You should focus on two things during the consultation. First is whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure or not. The second is to have your questions and concerns answered so you’re aware of what’s going on and comfortable with your decision to undergo surgery.

You will also need to undergo a physical examination and do some routine blood tests to ensure that you are physically healthy and that your body can handle the stress of the surgery. You should make sure to discuss with Dr Turner all potential risks and complications that can occur, and how they can be prevented.

Be very candid with Dr Turner during this period about your current health & medications and the results of the procedure and what exactly you are looking for. This will help Dr Turner get those results for you if your expectations are realistic.

Extended Tummy Tuck Surgery Procedures

The extended tummy tuck procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and focuses on the removal of excess skin from the abdominal region and the flanks. To remove abdominal saggy skin, the incision made by Dr Turner is similar but longer than the one made during a traditional tummy tuck which is a horizontal incision between the hip bones, right above the pubic bone.

After the incisions are made, Dr Turner will check your abdominal muscles and can repair them if there is any damage. Then, the abdominal skin will be excised around the umbilicus and fat deposits will be removed. The procedure can be combined with body liposuction (Lipo abdominoplasty) to eliminate the excess fat in the area or the mons / FUPA. Once the desired results are achieved, Dr Turner will suture the incisions and that is the end of your extended tummy tuck surgery.

Recovery from the Extended Tummy Tuck Procedure

Recovery from Extended Tummy Tuck Sydney

Your full recovery period will take between four to six weeks, by the end of which you should be able to resume your daily life activities. Almost all cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures require four to six weeks of rest after the procedure. You can also go back to the gym by the end of these six to eight weeks. However, it is worth noting that the complete results of the procedure may not be apparent right away. In fact, they may take up to a year to be completely visible.

You should wear a compression garment throughout your recovery period to avoid prolonged swelling and bruising. The compression belts are also helpful because they support the tummy and can even enhance the results. It is best to wear it every day, only taking it off to shower, especially during the first couple of weeks of the recovery period.

You should refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol as they increase the risk of infections and impair wound healing. Similarly, avoid excessively strenuous physical activities during the recovery period as that can put pressure on the incisions and slow down the healing process.
