Facelift Cost in Australia: Sydney Fees

Procedure-Deep Plane Facelift-img

Dr Scott J Turner | Specialist Plastic Surgeon (FRACS)

A deep plane facelift starts from $33,300 all-inclusive for surgery in Sydney, about four hours in theatre. Fees range up to $65,471 for a full Vertical Restore Facelift, in which a deep neck lift, brow lift, upper and lower eyelid surgery, an upper lip lift and fat grafting are combined in one operation of up to 8 hours. Fees reflect theatre time, surgical complexity and the procedures combined, and cover the surgeon, specialist anaesthetist and private hospital. Facelift surgery for facial ageing is cosmetic, so there is no Medicare rebate or private health insurance benefit.

Facelift Cost at a Glance

All fees below are all-inclusive for surgery in Sydney.

Procedure Theatre time All-inclusive fee
Short scar facelift 4 h $33,300
Lower facelift 4 h 30 min $37,463
Vertical Restore Facelift 7 h 45 min $65,471
Deep plane facelift 4 h to 7 h 45 min $33,300 to $65,471

Fees with a deep neck lift include the $952 LigaSure device used in that procedure. Surgery for men is scheduled with an additional 30 minutes of theatre time, which adds about $4,163.

Facelift Cost by Procedure

Facelift describes several different operations. The fee for each follows its theatre time.

Deep plane facelift cost

A deep plane facelift works beneath the SMAS layer to reposition the deeper tissues of the midface, jowls, jawline and lateral neck. Fees start from $33,300 all-inclusive, for about four hours in theatre. Adding a standard neck lift brings the fee to $37,463, a deep neck lift to $42,577, and the full combination of procedures to $65,471.

Short scar facelift cost

A short scar facelift uses a limited incision in front and behind the ear, extending along the temporal and occipital hairlines. It includes a deep plane facelift dissection with lateral platysma suspension, takes about four hours in theatre and the all-inclusive fee is $33,300.

Short scar facelift is sometimes searched as mini facelift. Mini facelift describes different operations at different practices, including skin-only procedures, so it is worth confirming whether the procedure involves a deep plane dissection or only skin lifting.

Lower facelift cost

A lower facelift focuses on the jowls, jawline and upper neck by combining a deep plane facelift with traditional platysmaplasty. It takes about 4 hours 30 minutes in theatre, with an all-inclusive fee of $37,463.

Vertical Restore Facelift cost

The Vertical Restore Facelift combines a deep plane face and neck lift with a brow lift, upper and lower eyelid surgery, an upper lip lift and facial fat grafting in one operation. With every component, including a deep neck lift, it takes 7 hours 45 minutes and the all-inclusive fee is $65,471.

Not every patient has every component. The components included are determined at assessment, and the fee follows the time. The same components can also be staged across two or more shorter operations.

Facelift cost for men

Surgery for men is scheduled with an additional 30 minutes of theatre time, which adds about $4,163 to the all-inclusive fee. A deep plane facelift with lateral neck lift for a male patient takes 4 hours 30 minutes and is $37,463. Planning for men is covered on the male facelift page.

Adding Neck, Brow, Eyelid, Lip and Fat Grafting Procedures

Procedures added to a facelift are performed under the same anaesthetic and hospital admission. Each one adds its scheduled theatre time to the total.

Procedure Adds to theatre time Adds to fee, about
Standard neck lift 30 min $4,163
Deep neck lift, including LigaSure device 60 min $9,277
Brow lift 45 min $6,244
Upper blepharoplasty 30 min $4,163
Lower blepharoplasty 30 min $4,163
Upper lip lift 30 min $4,163
Facial fat grafting 30 min $4,163
Male patient 30 min $4,163

Amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar. The calculator gives the exact total for any combination.

Example combinations

Operation Theatre time All-inclusive fee
Deep plane facelift with lateral neck lift 4 h $33,300
With brow lift 4 h 45 min $39,544
With deep neck lift and brow lift 5 h 45 min $48,821
With deep neck lift, brow lift and upper and lower blepharoplasty 6 h 45 min $57,146
With every component 7 h 45 min $65,471
With every component, male patient 8 h 15 min $69,633

Whether to combine procedures in one operation or stage them is a clinical decision, based on your anatomy, your health and the length of the operation. Fees for a brow lift or eyelid surgery performed on its own are on the brow lift cost and blepharoplasty cost pages. A lip lift or neck lift performed on its own is quoted at consultation.

What the Fee Includes

Every fee on this page includes:

  • the surgeon’s fee
  • the specialist anaesthetist’s fee
  • the private hospital fee
  • scheduled post-operative reviews, including the day 3 and day 7 reviews
  • the LigaSure device, where a deep neck lift is performed

The fee does not include the $450 consultation fee, accommodation or travel.

Comparing Facelift Quotes

Practices in Australia quote facelift surgery in two ways. An all-inclusive quote covers the surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital in one figure. A surgeon’s-fee-only quote shows the surgeon’s fee, with the hospital and anaesthetist billed separately, sometimes by third parties and sometimes not confirmed until close to the surgery date.

On multi-hour surgery the difference is substantial, because the anaesthetist and hospital are charged for every hour of the operation. Before comparing two quotes, check:

  • whether the anaesthetist and hospital are included
  • the theatre time the quote is based on
  • whether the overnight stay and follow-up appointments are included
  • which procedures the quote covers

Medicare and Private Health Insurance

Facelift surgery for facial ageing is cosmetic. There is no Medicare item for it, no Medicare rebate and no private health insurance benefit.

Some procedures performed at the same time can be treated differently. Upper eyelid surgery may be eligible under MBS item 45617 where specific criteria are met, such as documented visual impairment, with photographic evidence recorded in the clinical notes. Eligibility is assessed individually and is not assumed, and the facelift itself remains cosmetic.

Consultations, Deposit and Cooling-Off Period

Cosmetic surgery in Australia follows the Medical Board of Australia’s guidelines, and several of their requirements shape when fees are paid.

  • A referral from a registered medical practitioner is required before your first consultation.
  • Two pre-operative consultations are mandatory. The first may be by video and the second is in person.
  • Each patient is assessed for psychological conditions, including body dysmorphic disorder, using a validated screening tool.
  • A seven-day cooling-off period applies before surgery can be booked or a deposit paid.

The consultation fee is $450, charged at the time of consultation and not deducted from the surgical fee. A $1,000 surgical deposit is payable only after the second consultation, never at the first. A formal itemised quote is provided after assessment.

Travelling to Sydney for Surgery

Dr Turner consults in Bondi Junction, on the Northern Beaches, in Newcastle and in Canberra, and performs surgery in accredited private hospitals in Sydney. The fees on this page apply to surgery in Sydney wherever you consult.

Facelift surgery is followed by an overnight hospital stay, with reviews at day 3 and day 7. Patients travelling from regional NSW, the ACT or interstate are advised to stay in Sydney for 7 to 10 days after surgery, which covers the day 3 and day 7 reviews. Accommodation and travel are not included in the fee, and the practice can suggest accommodation near the clinic. More detail is on the out-of-town patients page.

Cost and the Surgical Plan

Patients often ask whether a longer operation is better value. The fee follows theatre time, and theatre time follows the surgical plan, so the plan comes first. Which technique and which additional procedures are appropriate depends on anatomy, skin quality, neck findings, general health and any earlier surgery, assessed across two consultations. A procedure chosen on fee rather than assessment may not treat the findings it was chosen for. All surgery carries risk, and the risks of cosmetic surgery are discussed in full at consultation.

Facelift Cost FAQs

How much does a facelift cost in Australia?

Facelift fees vary between practices and with how each practice quotes. Dr Turner’s all-inclusive fees for surgery in Sydney start at $33,300 for a deep plane facelift with lateral neck lift, about four hours in theatre, and reach $65,471 for a full Vertical Restore Facelift of 7 hours 45 minutes. A formal itemised quote is provided after assessment.

Does the fee include the hospital and anaesthetist?

Yes. Every fee on this page includes the surgeon’s fee, the specialist anaesthetist, the private hospital and scheduled post-operative reviews, and the LigaSure device where a deep neck lift is performed. The $450 consultation fee, accommodation and travel are separate.

How much does a deep plane facelift cost?

A deep plane facelift with lateral neck lift is $33,300 all-inclusive, for about four hours in theatre. With a standard neck lift it is $37,463, and with a deep neck lift it is $42,577. A full Vertical Restore Facelift, with every component, is $65,471.

How much does a mini facelift cost?

Mini facelift describes different operations at different practices, including skin-only procedures. Dr Turner’s short scar facelift uses a limited incision with deep plane work beneath the skin, takes about four hours and is $33,300 all-inclusive.

How much does a Vertical Restore Facelift cost?

Is a facelift covered by Medicare or private health insurance?

No. A facelift for facial ageing is cosmetic and attracts no Medicare rebate or private health insurance benefit. Upper eyelid surgery performed at the same time may be eligible for a rebate where specific criteria are met, assessed individually.

Why is a facelift priced by theatre time?

The surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital are all engaged for the full length of the operation, so the fee follows the time. Pricing by the hour also means the fee is set by the surgical plan rather than by the name of a procedure.
